The Portuguese João Barreto Trio brings a unique lyrical language: a dialogue between classical music, European jazz and improvised music with a strong connection to Portuguese folk identity in organic song-like forms.

João Barreto Trio is a recent project by the young pianist and composer João Barreto. The group performs mainly original compositions, as well as some jazz covers of traditional Portuguese songs. The type of music can be classified as contemporary European jazz, taking inspiration from artists such as Mário Laginha, Esbjörn Svensson, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau, and even Avishai Cohen. but always influenced by classical music and with a strong connection to their Portuguese roots. The Trio already has several concerts scheduled, performing at venues such as the Casa da Música and Teatro Rivoli (Porto), Fundacion Ávila (Ávila, ES), and others. With a set of songs that merge the worlds of contemporary jazz, classical and Portuguese music, the trio presents an unforgettable concert. 

 

João Barreto, piano and composition
João Barreto is a young Portuguese pianist and composer, born in 2005. Winner of several national and international competitions, he currently performs as a concert pianist and composer, developing a fusion between jazz, classical and Portuguese music. He began his musical studies at the age of 3, studying with Teresa Brandão, Jefferson Mello, and, since 2021, with Álvaro Teixeira Lopes. In jazz, from the ages of 9 to 17, he studied with Pablo Lapidusas and currently takes occasional lessons with João Paulo Esteves da Silva. In 2023, he finished high school with a perfect score in piano and composition and enrolled in a music degree program at the University of Aveiro with a full merit scholarship. João has been developing projects in music composition, music for cinema,  jazz (solo, trio and Big Band) and classical performance (solo, chamber music and soloist with orchestra). The pianist has already recorded several projects and has received reviews on mainstream media such as Antena 2, SIC, jazz.pt, among others. He has played also in Brussels, Antwerp, Madrid, Orbetello,  Beaune, among others. 

João Silva, drums
With a degree in jazz drums from ESMAE (Porto), where he lives, João Silva is an active musician on the Portuguese music scene. The drummer has several musical projects, including Marco Coelho trio and quartet, Trio Guga Boulhosa, Gileno Santana Trio, RUTE, Líquido Mundo Moderno, Xonanga, Diz(cordância), among others. He has worked with renowned musicians, including Eurico Costa and Gileno Santana, Gil Silva, João Fragoso, João Paulo Silva, João Próspero, João Pedro Dias, Pedro Jerónimo, and, recently, played with the Douro Jazz Orchestra and the recognised vocalist, Maria João. He is a member of the PortaJazz Association, where he performs frequently. He also has a solo concert at the Hakko venue and participated in the 15th Porta Jazz Festival with the ensemble “Ursa Maior” at the Rivoli theater. 

Duarte Júlio, double bass
Duarte Júlio is an emerging double bass player on the national jazz scene. He co-leads groups such as RUTE and ONOMA, winners of prestigious jazz awards, and also collaborates with the Eurico Costa Quartet. He has played in renowned festivals such as Guimarães Jazz, Prémio Jovens Músicos, and Festa do Jazz. He began studying music at the age of 5 (violin) at Eborae Mvsica in Évora. In Portimão, he completed a professional course in jazz instrumentation at the Escola da Bemposta. In 2025, he completed his degree in Jazz Instrument (Double bass) at ESMAE, Porto, and will soon will release the first album of the group ONOMA. He has performed at Casa da Música, Festa do Avante, Museu Nacional dos Coches, and Associação Porta-Jazz.
