Legendary Samla Mammas Manna return to Finland after 50 years.
Samla Mammas Manna are true legends of the Swedish progressive music movement. Since the early 1970s, the band have developed a unique musical language where Swedish folk music, progressive rock, the humorous and experimental spirit of Frank Zappa, and advanced improvisation come together.
Their music is virtuosic, playful and unpredictable – and still refuses to fit neatly into any traditional genre category. This distinctive combination of musical skill, humour, improvisation and a spirit of experimentation lies at the heart of Samla Mammas Manna’s music.
In 1976, the band began a collaboration with British musician Fred Frith and his legendary group Henry Cow. Samla Mammas Manna became part of Rock in Opposition, the international movement that brought together progressive and experimental bands in opposition to the dominance of the major record companies. The band later also served as Frith’s backing group on his 1980 album Gravity.
Coste Apetrea – A Swedish Guitar Legend with Strong Ties to Finland
A central figure in Samla Mammas Manna is guitarist Coste Apetrea, whose musical career also has strong connections to Finland.
For Finnish audiences, he may be best known for his legendary guitar solo on Pekka Pohjola’s classic Sekoilu seestyy. Apetrea has also collaborated with Jukka Tolonen on the albums Touch Wood (1981) and Blue Rain (1985), and played guitar on Jim Pembroke’s solo album Corporal Cauliflowers Mental Function.
Samla Mammas Manna’s second album, Måltid (1973), has earned a place in the prestigious book Tusen svenska klassiker (A Thousand Swedish Classics), which presents one thousand classic Swedish books, films, records and television programmes.
Now, Samla Mammas Manna return to Finland for the first time in 50 years.
This will be an encounter with Swedish progressive-rock history, improvisation, musical humour and virtuosity – performed by musicians carrying on the legacy of one of the most distinctive forces in Swedish experimental rock.
